Episode 8: We feed a gelatinous cube

When we last left this band of misfits we were holed up in the woods with the human villagers, getting information out of them about this werewolf outbreak, and watching the village for signs of attack. The werewolves however seem to be holed up for the evening at least and the villagers are coming around, well, except the mayor, so the party reconvened and decided to go after the book store lady's book that tells this tale. Hopefully she's not as crazy as the villagers think she is.

The mayor did helpfully tell us there was an old escape tunnel from the mayor's mansion to one of the farm houses outside the wall, so that's where we started. We were able to find the farm house and tunnel fairly easy, but it was obvious in the farm house that some calamity had happened. Overturned furniture, ripped clothes and the like.

We decided to send the two with dark vision -- Meghan as a half drow elf and Malek as a tiefling both have this -- into the tunnel ahead of the main party to sneak-scout ahead. Meghan asked Paul to remain with the main party for communication purposes. And as a bit of humor, he decided to perch on Vohn's shoulder. Vohn is 3' tall, about 35lbs; Paul is a red tailed hawk so somewhere around 20" long and 2lbs.

Malek and Meghan entered the tunnel and were able to get in a fair ways before they ran into a weird sight. It looked like a dead werewolf floating. Turns out, it was floating ... in a Gelatinous Cube*. So Meghan alerted Paul (danger!) and went in to fight, as did Malek. Paul did a hawk call and took off from Vohn's shoulder into the tunnel, and thankfully the rest of the party got the hint and took off after him since Paul can't actually talk.

Malek hit the creature, then it moved forward and Malek just barely got out of the way in time. Meghan also went in to hit it. The rest of the party is on their way at this point, and Lutor realized quickly that it was too dark down here for most of the party so he put a light cantrip on himself.

The next round didn't go as well, the party arrived just in time to see Malek and Meghan do damage to the creature ... and then the creature moving forward, swallowing them both whole.

Thankfully the party quickly realized what was going on and waded in to help. And helpful they were. Thonk, Fizzledorp, and Lutor waded in to start hitting it while Vohn stood back and shot it and Paul did talon-swoop attacks from Thonk's shoulders. And Vohn killed the monster, dropping Malek and Meghan to the ground but temporarily knocking out our night vision (flash from the muzzle of Vohn's gun).

And then Meghan starts in on Vohn as this is the second time he's shot at her causing her issues and unfortunately takes it too far, hurting his feelings. We're still learning how to be a cohesive party.

We recovered some old weapons and a key ring with 20 keys on it, and the body of an adult male werewolf. Meghan inspected it and determined it was freshly dead, so now we're convinced the werewolves know where this tunnel is and are going to proceed even more cautiously.
