Elle grew up in the privileged world of nobility as the middle daughter of a minor but well respected noble in the Elvish kingdom. All three daughters were well educated from the beginning of their lives, schooled in running a keep, math, music, social niceties and the like. Being High Elves, there's always an element of nature and magic involved in general education. All three girls were being trained to make good matches to increase the stature of their father's domain through marriage.
However, Elle had other ideas. She started getting in trouble for not following the path set out for her. They realized she showed an affinity for magic, but she wanted to learn combat spells rather than trade, commerce, or household management magic. It was all handled in a civilized manner, but she would spend hours or days holed up researching combat magic.
Elle also started skipping family and social gatherings as much as possible, for she grew annoyed with the elvish ways of debating the merits of something for days or weeks rather than acting on the situation. She was also tired of hearing about how short she was, how her perfect little sister Vanya was already taller than her, how she really should spend more time making herself pretty, and the like. Some days it felt like if she heard "Maren, stop setting fires and do your hair" one more time she'd just scream. Luckily they didn't always catch on that she was off learning "inappropriate" magic. The parents were in contract negotiations for her older sister's marriage. As the eldest Megilwen was the heir, so they had been grooming her to attract the highest ranking noble's son she could to come join her to run their father's domain.
Then the day came for Megilwen's engagement party. The contract negotiations were done, and Megilwen had had her adult naming ceremony. Elle decided to play nice for the party, for it was a great day for Megilwen and the Ambermond family in general for Megilwen had attracted the second son of a fairly significant noble, which strengthens the Ambermond standing in the kingdom. She even made sure to put together a new dress in rich blues to match her eyes and have one of the ladies maids do her hair in intricate braids. After all, with so many in town maybe she'd find a decent conversation.
What she hadn't fully thought out was now that Megilwen was engaged, she was next in line for marriage contract negotiations. And since Elle had spent years avoiding as many social engagements, plus her eccentricities becoming known, her father was having difficulties starting those conversations. She still had another 30 years before becoming an adult, but elves can be rather long-winded when negotiating contracts.
Elle caught her father at Megilwen's engagement party discussing with one of the wealthy merchants the possibility of matching Elle with one of the merchant's sons and completely freaked out. She was not ready to start this phase of life, and after her older sister landing such a good match the idea of settling for a merchant's son was insulting.
So Elle left the party, returned to her rooms and packed. And then repacked, a few times, for she had no idea what to take with her on her journey aside from her spell book and her bow. She did remember to change out of her finery into a more humble tunic and leggings and was all set to leave with no reminders of home. Last minute though she repacked one last time, adding the fine blue gown to her backpack and her family ring at the bottom of her spell component pouch. She also did slip into her father's office to take very small portion of what would have been her dowry funds to help her get started.
Then while the party was still in full swing, she left her family home.
The next few years she spent wandering the human lands and learning more about being a wizard. She'd occasionally take mercenary gigs for the coin and experience, but would also periodically wander on her own.
About 3 years after running away from home she was camping in some woods she was exploring when she heard someone approaching her tent. Alarm is a handy spell after all. Turns out they were a small adventuring party heading to a keep to retrieve some stolen items. So she agreed to join the party at least for a while and help out with her wizard abilities. She introduced herself as just Elle, an Elven Wizard out for adventure.
