This story takes place in the town of Waterdeep and under the town in the lair of "the Mad Mage". The party currently consists of:
Melchizedor, the dwarven Cleric of Heironious
Talon, the Aarakocra (bird-man who can fly) Fighter
Unit 2408, the Warforged (humanoid living construct) Barbarian
Luthis, the Kenku (raven-man who can not fly) Blood Hunter
Evangeline, the tiefling Paladin of Tyr
Last we saw this party they were underground starting their exploration of this lair. After resting up they continued their adventures and found a Vampire in a stone coffin under a magical shield. The Vampire is staked, so therefore unable to do anything, but it isn't actually dead. We had some debate on whether to kill this creature or not, and Unit 2408 insisted we verify it was indeed undead and evil. So Evangeline popped off a 'Divine Sense' where she detects good, evil, undead, fiend, and celestial. Shocking news ... the vampire was an evil undead.
But, he's also very well contained and in stasis. The stake keeps it unable to do anything, and there's an arcane shield as the lid of the stone coffin. As much as this bothers her, Eva agreed to leave it be for now, though she will come back to finish it off once she has the right tools.
They did though booby trap the coffin, in case it came alive before they could come back to finish it off. Melchizedor and Evangeline both donated some holy water that they put in a tin cup that they then put upside down on the magical shield right over the vampire's face. So if the shield fails, the vampire will take a faceful of holy water. Which is essentially acid to them.
Knowing our luck, months down the road a horribly disfigured vampire will start vengefully hunting us.
So we continued down the hall to a turn and there's another door. Luthis and Talon sneak up to listen in while us armored and noisy sorts waited far enough that we won't alert if there's someone on the other side of the door, but close enough we can help them.
I'm not sure why, but as Luthis was listening at the door, Talon opened the door. OK, game on. So those two enter while the clanky ones catch up.
Inside this large room we've entered through the east door, and there's a door opposite of the one we entered. It's a wide room, to the north there's wide steps leading up to a throne. The throne is sculpted out of marble and a wyvern's skeleton. Yes, really. The arms of the throne are the front arms of the wyvern. The ceilings are around 50' tall so Talon can finally fly.
As we're kind of looking around Luthis approaches the throne ... and a sorceress shoots an inky black green line of energy at him and doing a lot of damage. Surprise! She then disappears, and a large burly human comes around one side of the throne while a flesh golem comes around the other.
Talon elects to fly up and shoot arrows at the flesh golem, he's quite good at the arial support route. Visually though he's flying about 10' in front of the snout of this skeletal wyvern. I'm really hoping that wyvern doesn't animate.
Luthis activates his blood curse and launches several crossbow bolts at the burly human 10' in front of him, and then scurries over closer to the staircase, away from the throne. He isn't a front line fighter.
Melchizedor strides right up to the flesh golem and unloads on him, surrounds the flesh golem with a shimmery globe, then steps back. This provokes an attack of opportunity, but the golem misses.
The flesh golem then steps forward to swing at Melchizedor, and hits for some significant damage ... but also takes damage due to that shimmery globe Mel had set on him.
Unit 2408 walks up to the burly human, rages, and brings the blade down a couple of times. Evangeline decides to join Unit 2408 in taking down the burly human with her hammer.
The burly human decides to take his annoyance out on Evangeline, but misses. One should have connected, but Luthis has an ability to temporarily blind combatants as a reaction so he blinded the burly human causing him to miss Eva.
And then the sorceress reappeared, over behind Unit 2408 and Evangeline, and proceeds to shoot lightning at us. Not sure Unit 2408 noticed in his rage but they both took some damage. She then scurries off behind the wyvern-throne.
Talon, our eye in the sky, shoots more arrows at the flesh golem. Luthis also shoots the flesh golem with crossbow bolts. Due to the nature of what he is, the bolts also do lightening damage. Unfortunately, while the bolts themselves appear to do damage to the flesh golem, the lightening damage appears to heal the thing.
Melchizedor then repeats his attack that leaves the shimmery field around the flesh golem, and steps away. The flesh golem took the bait and swung at Mel, hitting him and taking more damage. And it falls over dead. However, Melchizedor is quite seriously hurt by this point.
Unit 2408 continues swinging at the burly human and doing damage, as does Evangeline. She does look over towards Melchizedor to see his condition, but he just growls at her that he's OK and keep fighting.
And that's when this session ended.
