When we last left this crew, they had just had a near-miss with an ancient blue dragon, turned over the blue dragon mask to the Waterdeep council, and went home to Dragon's Bane Keep to rest up a little while the council figured out the next steps.
Tsedek, our charming Tiefling Rogue
Itanis, a devious High Elf Wizard, fond of controlling any situation we may find ourselves in
Leoven, our quiet but effective Wood Elf Ranger
Magnus, the Human Paladin of Heironious, he has followed a vengeance path
Elle, the small but sparky High Elf Wizard, fond of blowing things up with lots of fire
Upon the party's return to their home they notice some storm activity off in the distance. They quickly realized it was coming from the direction of an abandoned dragon lair in our woods, and that the keep was likely in danger.
Being who we are, we immediately set about evacuating the town and keep to Waterdeep, putting Melchizador in charge of that.
One of our shop keepers, who is actually 3 kobolds in a trench coat, came to the party offering to take us discreetly to the dragon lair, as they knew where it was. Of course we start asking questions to find out that long ago a kobold clan was in service to the previous resident of the lair. They do not want to be enslaved to another dragon and offered to take us through the kobold tunnels to the dragon lair. Strangely, we accepted. Even the paladin was OK with this, oddly enough.
Once we knew the townsfolk and keep residents were safe, off we went following the merchant kobolds. They lead us through a series of winding tunnels, skirting around their lair, then through some more tunnels. Going underground like this bypassed all of the new dragon's lair traps that were beginning to spring up, saving us time and damage.
Though why the paladin is OK with kobolds this near to the keep escapes most of us.
We arrive at the back entrance to the dragon's lair, where our kobold guides stay behind at the last bend. See they don't want to risk getting near whichever dragon has taken up residence.
Again this was long enough ago I'm not going to remember the combat details unfortunately. But here's the idea of what went down.
After a brief peek into the cavern to see what we were up against, we find the pissed off ancient blue dragon that Leoven had taunted a few days ago. Great. Also turns out, the dragon was a girl dragon and she had just laid eggs. Awesome, more blue dragons.
So we set about eradicating this threat to our keep and town. Itanis promptly throws up a ceiling in the dragon cavern so the dragon couldn't take flight. Tsedek went invisible and snuck around to the side of the dragon, while Elle and Leoven entered the cavern to find crystal structures to hide behind. OK, Elle hid, Leoven climbed the wall.
Magnus strode right in towards the dragon, taunting her. Sounds about right for this group.
This combat was fierce. We're attacking an ancient blue dragon in her new home near her new eggs. As everyone knows, mama bears are dangerous. But Magnus and Tsedek start physically beating on this dragon. Leoven turns into his machine-gun archer self. Elle starts lobbing fire. Itanis shifted the room about a couple times till he got it the way he wanted it then started pelting her with his caltrops of doom.
One of our many problems in this fight is when she breathed her breath weapon, lightning, the crystal structures in this room started glowing. We quickly found out one of her many lair tricks was to take that charge and zot someone with it. Ow.
After taking incredible amounts of damage though, we were successful in killing the ancient blue dragon. Magnus then proceeds to destroy 2 of the 3 blue dragon eggs, he only stopped destroying the eggs when we talked him into letting Itanis put one in a pocket dimension for now, sadly out of Elle's reach though.
