OK, I'm probably in over my head, but a few of us started an epic campaign today. I really wish I could capture the GM's story telling, but that is as of right now beyond me. Also, I'll see if over time I can get my fellow players to share their stories at least in part. To start us off though we have the following characters:
Luthis, a Kenku with a talent for the crossbow it seems. Kenku are humanoid Ravens, flightless, with some interesting speech.
Talon, an Aarakocra with a talent with long bows. Aarakocra are humanoid birds with flight.
Unit 2408, a Warforged Barbarian. Warforged are a hybrid humanoid-construct. Think kinda like a terminator merged with humanoid. They're made mostly of metal and wood, but yet magical effects like healing can still restore health.
Evangeline Zima, Tiefling Paladin of Tyr. Tieflings are humanoids with demonic blood, so they have tails and horns and are commonly red skinned (of various shades). Eva is blue skinned however. Tyr is the deity of War and Justice, to further his cause Eva took an Oath of Devotion and is Lawful Good.
At the start of this story, we do not know each other at all.
We start this game in the city of Waterdeep. It is a popular, large, sprawling city with many taverns, inns, shops, residences, etc. It even has its own castle.
Sitting in the Mighty Minotaur Tavern we find Eva at a table having a meal. It's a typical tavern mid day, patrons scattered at various tables having a meal or an ale, the low din of many conversations going on. One person of note is a wizard at the bar.
The normalcy is interrupted though with this rolling low rumble and all the dishes start rattling, then it stops. Then starts the sounds of screaming and running in the streets. Just as Eva is getting up to investigate, in runs a towns person slashed all to heck. Following him is a Ghoul ... who gets promptly sliced in half by a large metal construct. The construct then lumbers off to deal with more of the chaos.
The wizard then shouts something and dashes outside, Eva follows. Outside there are several undead attacking and killing towns people and general chaos. We're at a 4-way intersection and for lack of better reference I'll call the tavern on the south-west corner. On the southern road there are soldiers trying to set up a barrier to keep more undead from coming this direction.
Running away from this barrier is a towns person and it wasn't looking good for this soul when an Aarakocra drifts down from on high and shoots the undead, killing it. The Aarakocra then flies back up out of melee range.
About this time two lumbering large undead ogres barrel through the town guard's barricade and head straight for the towns people. Out of no where a Kenku with a crossbow slides forward and shoots one of the Ogres 3 times. That Ogre rambled up to the Kenku and smashed him hard.
The wizard from the bar casts a spell ... but it fizzled upon casting, so he's completely flustered at this point saying something's not right.
Eva strides up to the Ogre who just smashed the Kenku, casts searing smite, and proceeds to bash the Ogre twice. Did respectable damage, and added the taunt of "Pick on someone your own size".
The Aarakocra lets loose with two arrows at the second Ogre, solid hits. The Kenku lets loose more crossbow bolts at the first Ogre, again solid hits.
The second Ogre realizes the "fun" was over where his buddy was so lumbered up next to him and proceeds to just smash Eva, landing a solid blow. First Ogre is torn between which annoyance to deal with so he smacks both Eva and the Kenku. The bar wizard then decides that since his spells aren't working, he'd waltz into melee and smack at the second Ogre with his staff. He did hit, he just didn't do a whole lot of damage.
Eva, realizing the first Ogre was looking more rough and the Kenku was still in range of his swipe, lands another blow on him but misses with the second swing.
The Aarakocra flies down behind the two Ogres and lets loose with two more arrows at the first Ogre ... who then keels over dead. Kenku then does some sort of internal flame trick that covers his crossbow and shoots the second Ogre, landing solid hits. The second Ogre takes mighty swings at Eva and misses horribly, so she returns the favor landing a couple of good hits.
Then the Aarakocra shoots the second Ogre again and this time it keels over dead. After everyone catches their breath the Warforged ambles up to the cluster of people, he had been dealing with the other undead terrorizing the towns folk. The bar wizard announces that he is Rubis and he desperately needs to get to his master's tower to try to figure out what is going on here. He has 5gp for each of us to take him there ... and promptly hands us each 5gp.
We then introduced ourselves to each other and Rubis, and he indicated again he was in urgent need of getting to his master's tower. Eva turns to Luthis and asks "Are you injured?" Luthis responds with "Yes hurt captain tight pants!" That required a long pause and a solid blink but she reached out her hand and healed him some.
Eva then set about to organize the party to traverse a city that has random fires, screams, and assorted mayhem going on. Luthis agreed (I think lol) to go ahead of the party and scout which direction was safest at the cross roads. Talon agreed to fly up and do overwatch. Eva led the main party with a "Rubis, you are to stay behind me and tell me the direction of the tower" and had Unit 2408 follow Rubis to keep him from being stabbed from behind.
The party was able to traverse fairly easily the few block over to a back road that leads to the tower with Talon reporting various fires and fights in the distance as we traveled. The towns people by and large were running inside and boarding up windows/doors to the outside world. As the party got closer to the tower we realized two things. First, part of the outside wall to the tower had been breached, and Luthis spotted some tracks on a parallel-ish road that leads to the tower that were four footed with a swishy tail.
Rubis was quite agitated at the sight of that and wanted to run forward, but Eva was able to keep him behind her as they approached the breech in the wall. As they came around that corner, and Talon flew over the wall, we realized there was a large skeleton trying to bash the tower. A very large, four legged, tailed skeleton. At this point the skeleton turns its head towards us. Or, rather, should I say heads. It is an undead hydra.
And that's where the game session ended today. More next week!
